Black Spot Program

25 September 2017

The moment Bill Shorten is out of the country, it is typical of Anthony Albanese to try and grab a headline.

Even by his standards, seeking to politicise road trauma is a desperate act.

The Turnbull Government has committed record funding to projects on our major highways, regional arterials and local roads, as part of our $75 billion infrastructure investment program.

There has not been any cut to the Black Spot program with hundreds of projects already completed or underway in partnership with other levels of government.

Over the life of the current program (2014-15 to 2018-19), the Australian Government is providing $475 million to the Black Spot Program to improve road safety across the nation.

This includes the additional $200 million provided for the program in the 2014-15 Budget.

Reducing road trauma has always received bipartisan support and I am disappointed that Mr Albanese is seeking to score political points on the issue.

It’s about safer drivers, on safer roads, in safer cars. The Federal Government is working with all of the states to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
