The Turnbull Government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), is providing up to $20 million to support world-leading research and development into hydrogen production and export.

ARENA will work with Australia’s leading scientists and industries to explore the enormous potential that hydrogen has to offer.

There are many ways of producing hydrogen from electrolysis to heat and chemical processes, to using sunlight and even biological processes. ARENA will be looking for innovative projects that use renewable energy to produce hydrogen, capitalising on Australia’s rich renewable energy sources.

Hydrogen can be exported around the world and used in domestic applications such as hydrogen cars, energy storage and household and industrial gas use. Earlier this year, the CSIRO identified hydrogen as a priority export opportunity.

“This funding could deliver world-leading breakthroughs and cost reductions in renewable hydrogen production and export,” said Minister for the Environment and Energy, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP.

“Australia has the potential to develop a thriving renewable hydrogen market, delivering secure, reliable, affordable and low emissions energy to households and industry both here and overseas.”

The Hydrogen R&D funding round opens on 20 December 2017 and close at 5pm AEDT 28 February 2018. For more information, visit
